A focus on sports and fitness

CrossFit JordanFitness is something we think about a lot in Jordan’s world. We learned a long time ago that with a limb difference, it’s super important to keep her core strong. If your core is strong, your body will not have as many long term issues due to a limb difference. So sports and fitness is a priority. Luckily, Jordan loves it all. If it’s challenging, she loves it even more.

This year, athletics are an even bigger priority. Jordan decided she wanted to join the Girl Scouts… and since she already had so many activities, I told her she would need to decide to drop one from her year. I didn’t expect her to pass up dance, but this year she is taking a year off to see what the scouts are like. She will continue to play softball, basketball and recently added: CrossFit.

CrossFit Kids is a really fun class that focuses on teaching kids strength – which is an awesome supplement to any other sports. While Jordan works to get stronger at CrossFit, her other sports will benefit. Right now, she’s working very hard at improving her backhanded swing for softball. Any and all strength work will help as well.

Adaptive CrossFit is a growing category in the CrossFit world… but most adaptations were created for adults. Many of those adults are members of the military who lost limbs in the war. Jordan is a little unusual since she’s a kid with a limb difference. We are very lucky to have found a gym that is interested in building opportunities for adaptive CrossFit and they’re taking the time to find ways to help Jordan adapt. We’re all learning as we go… Which is pretty much just how Jordan lives her life. What’s cool is we are learning and will be able to help other kids learn as well.

If you’ve ever seen or met an upper limb adaptive CrossFit athlete, I’d love to learn about their adaptations and if there are ways we can learn more for Jordan and all kinds of other kids who may want to join her with adaptive CrossFit Kids activities some day!

I LOVE THIS! My daughter has an arm almost just like Jordans! She is about to turn 8.. We are a very athletic family and I love TRX and many of the things crossfit does… Can you explain to me more what y’all are using in the pics? I think it would be great for maddie- I’ve had a hard time coming up with a creative solution for arm strength activities…. is that just a strap around her shoulders? its a bit hard to see! this is awesome! thanks!

Hi Bonnie! We’re giving different types of rubber bands a try to support Jordan while she’s doing strength work. I’ll be sure to report back more details as we find ways that really work. We’re also going to start working with heavier bars before we move to the full barbell for lifting.
