Limb Difference Dolls With a Side of Glitter

Jordan loves dolls. She loves sports. She loves 3D design and especially her Project Unicorn Glitter Shooter. She is the ultimate combination of all kinds of interests. She’s passionate and focused on them all. What is extra special is how Jordan has a community that supports her in every category of her life.

A Doll Like Me

Almost two years ago, Jordan was lucky enough to get a special doll in the mail from Amy who creates custom limb-different dolls for kids at A Doll Like Me. Jordan’s “Little Boo” was one of her first limb different doll creations. Jordan loves Little Boo. Her doll was even featured in an article about Jordan’s American Girl petition in the Kansas City Star.

For last few months, Amy has asked me to send Boo back for a few changes. What Amy sent back is super special. First, Little Boo officially has one hand and one little arm. (She didn’t have an official hand before!) Little Boo also has more hair to better match Miss Jordan’s long hair AND she has new outfits… Like a Rey outfit from Star Wars. (Which is extra cool since Jordan has a Rey costume of her own!) She also arrived with a Nemo outfit and bb-8 pajamas. Little Boo is back to sleeping next to Jordan every night. She is so happy.

A Step Ahead and Project Unicorn

Limb different dolls are so special. They help Jordan and any other kid with a physical difference feel less different. That’s why Jordan is so passionate about her American Girl petition. And while we wait for the company to offer limb different dolls, a prosthetic company in New York, started offering alterations to American Girl dolls. (Remember the amazing video of Emma?)

Jordan picked out one of her dolls – a “Truly Me” design – to send to A Step Ahead Prosthetics. The company is offering free alterations to any child with a limb difference. You just have to ship the doll and provide return shipping costs. Jordan’s doll was completed last month, but I decided to take this effort even further. After A Step Ahead sent Jordan’s doll back with a new prosthetic hand, I sent it to Sam Hobish, Jordan’s design partner, to match the doll with a mini-Project Unicorn design.

The result is pretty awesome:

The doll’s new accessories arrived in a custom-made wooden box. There’s a belt that holds the doll’s
compressed air with a Project Unicorn logo and an arm or leg belt to hold onto the sparkle cartridges… and of course, the unicorn horn arm.

And as if that wasn’t enough. Sam created a “goth-geek special edition” of the set. It comes from a conversation he and Jordan had during Maker Faire Bay Area. Jordan thinks Sam should have a black version of Project Unicorn so he can be the goth version. Now, Jordan’s doll has it!
