Taking Concerns to Huffington Post
I rarely publish my opinions on sites beyond Born Just Right, but a new show had me concerned enough to try and bring it to a wider audience. AMC, the network known for awesome television shows like Mad Men, is airing a reality show called Freakshow in February. There’s an ad on the network now and it shows adults with limb loss or limb differences who are okay with calling themselves “freaks.”
I just had a post published on the Huffington Post. Please share it and while you’re at it, there are some ways we can take action:

Laura – the show focuses on adults who participate in an old-style carnie show about the untypical. They are adults who are okay with calling themselves “freaks.” I support them in calling themselves what they want to call themselves… what is difficult for me is the use of the term in a more general way that makes it okay for anyone to use it. It’s disappointing.
AMC’s Freakshow is the new unscripted series that follows Todd Ray’s quirky family business — the Venice Beach Freakshow. Leaving behind a successful career in the music industry, Todd was finally able to realize his true passion: bringing together all things bizarre and unique, including two-headed animals, strange artifacts, eccentric performers and human oddities. Located on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, spectators gather to see truly exceptional people, specimens and creatures. Todd and his wife Danielle open their home and hearts to the extraordinary people who proudly call themselves “Freaks.” Normal is relative. Premieres Thu., Feb. 14 at 9:30/8:30c, only on AMC.

I read your post. Congrats for standing up and making it known. I felt thankful that we have some restrictions about the TV shows here in India. ( This is one moment where the freedom of speech and expression ( think you call there as first amedment ( if I am right), does not seem sooo beneficial ……….)… I could never imagine my daughter watching something like this when she grows up and a thought crosses her of being a freak!
